KIOWA Most folks carry a bit of their upbringing with them — a touch of accent or attitude. But Karen Ross harbors a whole houseful of her Texas roots, from vintage Bates camp blankets to old cowboy scarves to the silver-studded parade saddle that belonged to her father, a Houston rancher and jeweler.

And that's appropriate. For Ross is the entrepreneur behind Prairie Karen, a purveyor of all things Old West, from fine art to antique horse tack. Most of her business is done online or at trunk shows, although this time of year, she also opens a seasonal shop in nearby Elizabeth.

Monday found her at her kitchen counter, gazing out at the corral. Pacing the dirt were the four horses she owns with her husband,

Wally, a former University of Colorado professor and competitive bicyclist. Beyond the paddock were miles of tawny winter grass and the ranchland of the Bijou Basin.

"This is certainly not a place where when you're out of milk you run to the grocery store," Ross said. "But I've always loved this life. I don't want to trade it for anything."

Ross launched Prarie Karen seven years ago. Her two children from a previous marriage were grown, and she wanted a business that could lasso her love of Western objects.

Her house also reflects that passion, from its location to the décor. It sits on 80 acres southeast of Kiowa, 7 miles up a winding gravel road off Colorado 86 — one of those "first mailbox on your left and up the hill" addresses.

The house's exterior is plain, a light brown like the winter landscape. With 1,400 square feet on the main level and a functional basement, it sits on a small rise in a copse of pine trees. The elevated porches command southwest vistas.

But walk inside, and the house is tricked out like a showroom, or a small cowboy museum, for that matter. Ross' business motto is "a touch of Western elegance." That ethos is mirrored in the house.

thing you encounter is a coat rack bedecked with a half-dozen tooled-leather purses, ranging from small clutches to outright handbags. Topping the rack is her prize hat, a striking moss-green number with scarlet piping and hatband, plus blocked in the Montana style.

Like so much in Ross' life, it comes with a story.

"It's from the Rocky Mountain Hat Co. in Bozeman, Montana," she said. "The hatmaker originally didn't want to build it for me, said the color was ugly. But when he was making it, he kept getting compliments on it. Now he's selling a bunch in this color."

saddles of Mexican vaqueros. Dating from the 1940s, it was a gift to Ross' late dad during his Houston days.

"That's one thing I really treasure," she said. She pulled back a small flap of tooled leather to expose the saddlemaker's imprint: Chas. Castillo. Los Angeles, Calif.

The dining-room table was once a door to an old Southwestern church. A wide-screen TV by the gas fireplace sits atop a weathered blue cabinet. The walls are decorated with photo-realistic pencil drawings of ranch life by artist Karmel Timmons.

Muted colors dominate the palette, including the ivory-cream walls.

She sells the scarves, too. "I want to sell this to the lady who can put this on and push cattle and then wear it with a cashmere sweater in downtown Denver or New York City," Ross said.

"I'm not into bling," she said. "I like simple but beautiful pieces. We've decorated the house over time. We didn't want to go out and create instant décor. The search takes on a life of its own."

Not everything is vintage. Take the handsome living-room sideboard, a rustic oak number that houses a small but choice array of adult beverages. Turns out it's from Pottery Barn.

The couple bought the house four years ago after spying it on a horseback ride. "It was under construction, just framed out," Ross said. "From a distance we thought it was just a dilapidated old place."

Closer inspection proved the contrary. They bought the place and finished it, converting two of the upstairs bedrooms into an office.

Like many ranches, their place is a small menagerie. Along with the horses, the Rosses have a golden retriever and Belgian sheepdog, five barn cats and two Nigerian goats, Waylon and Willie. A few Angus cattle are usually pastured, though this year's herd is already sold.

Other animals show up, notably coyotes and elk. Then there was the time 40 head of bison came thundering down the road after breaching their fence at a neighboring ranch.

"That was scary," Ross said. "I'm just glad we weren't out on the road. They'll run over anything in their path, including a vehicle."

Along with her online site (prairie karen.com) and trunk shows, Ross operates a Prarie Karen seasonal shop in Elizabeth during the holidays. It's 15 miles from her house, at 796 E. Kiowa Ave. in a strip center off Colorado 86. Open through Dec. 24, it is closed Sundays.

But the house and the land are the center of her life.

Out by the corral, nuzzled by two horses — R.J. and Ozanna (named by a little girl who couldn't pronounce "O, Suzanna") — Ross surveyed the landscape in the noon light. An earlier pall of clouds had given way to blue sky. The wind was up, as it so often is in the Bijou Basin.

"We feel fortunate to be able to live out here," Ross said. "Isn't it just amazing?"

Opening Day

Opening day at Prairie Karen's Holiday Shop was terrific!!!! Great to see old customers ( who many have become dear friends! ) and have so many new people come in. We have tons of used gear, pre-worn shirts, tons of new wild rags and new artists. Stop by anytime ( except Sunday).. So nice to see everyone and THANK YOU! By the way, Jeffrey Mundell has done some incredible hand painted silk ties. What a great gift for that cowboy.

Eight Degrees!

This morning, at The KWR Ranch, our thermometer registered 8 degrees... A bit nippy for October. The good news: this weekend should be 60! We even blanketed our horses. Good thinking! Something I never used to do, but as they get older, why not?

Prairie Karen will be open again in Elizabeth, CO on November 21...every day except Sundays, until December 24. Hope to see old customers, and new ones, also. :-)

FALL IS IN THE AIR

Hard to imagine that we are now wearing wild rags, coats and gloves...We are still hoping that an Indian summer comes soon ( thank goodness we haven't had a freeze yet! ).

Bruce Sandifer, Classical Californio Horsemanship, will be returning Sept 23-27th. He came in June for a week and it was terrific... See his face book page: Classical Californio Horsemanship. Can't believe it has been so long since I have posted... Just returned from The Californios in Reno. We had so much fun and it is always great to see all of our friends.
Thanks to everyone for coming by.

Finally, we have had lots of rain. Yea... Animals and pastures are very happy. Not to mention, our fire danger has gone WAY down.

Ok, here is to a great summer. We are looking forward to Bruce Sandifer coming to ride with all of us from June 20-June 27... Stop by to audit, if you are available. It is truly a TREAT.

Unique western collection comes to Elbert County

Prairie Karen is back in Elizabeth for the second year in a row. The western collection of jewelry, scarves and clothing will be on display in time for holiday shopping.

Prairie Karen is not just a collection name, but also a woman by the name of Karen Ross – woman who loves riding horses and living on her Elbert County ranch.

Starting her business six years ago, Ross always had a passion for traditional viceroy and unique western ware. She grew up in her father's jewelry shop in Texas and is bringing her exclusive taste to Elbert County.

Ross’ collection is a collaboration of artists from all over the country. She works with jewelry artists, silversmiths and other artists who hand-make all of their pieces.

Ross enjoys working closely with the artists and only works with certain artists.

“I work with special artists, ones who have a unique talent and are lovely to work with,” she said. “I try to keep this fresh, and I’m always looking for something new and different.”

Ross will set up shop in the Elizabeth Post Office shopping center at 796 East Kiowa Ave. Her shop will be open for limited hours from Nov. 26 to Dec. 24. Ross said she is excited to be back in Elizabeth after having a successful appearance last year. She said though the economy is still down she has been able to continue to grow. She said she has learned where to keep her price points and with her prices there is something for everyone.

“When I first started, my pieces were too expensive,” she said. “And as the years went on it wasn’t workable, so I had to make an adjustment.”

To Ross it’s not about making a big sale, it’s about helping someone find the piece that is right for the customer. She said it’s all about how someone feels and what works best for them.

“If I see someone putting on a piece of jewelry that doesn’t do them justice, I will tell them, regardless of the price,” she said. “For me it’s not about making the sale, it’s about finding that piece of Western elegance that my customers will love for a lifetime.”

The Prairie Karen collection includes hand-engraved scarf slides, Western artwork, braided kangaroo bracelets, sterling silver bracelets and cuffs, hitched horse hair and braided rawhide pieces, sterling silver buckles and Conchos, Western leather purses and Western furnishings.

We had such a FUN day! Karmel and Matt Timmons, Shannon Wrango, Tuffy Flagler, Viki Dunagan, Corinne Brown, and of course, Wally and I... Meet and greet the artists. Thanks to everyone who came by. The shop is located in Elizabeth, CO by Guadalajara Restaurant, Magic Dog and Post Office. Prairie Karen has many new artists, both young and old! Bruce, undoubtably, is a premier Spade Bit person! Wal and I rode with him for three extraordinarily informative and fun days. He offers info that we haven't been exposed to before. And, in addition, Bruce and Ute ( his wife) are truly LOVELY and caring people. He always asked if we felt we got anything out of our days.. Well, YES!!!! Thank you tons!

We then went to Santa Ynez to The Vaquero Show...spent time with dear friends, enjoyed the presentations, and as Bruce says, looks at a bunch of very beautifully done geegaws..

Kittens on the Ranch

Our six month old kittens are creating havoc at our ranch. Our rabbit, Boyd, he lives with our two goats.. Now our kittens are beginning to think that they may be goats. Lots of confusion around here. :-)

What we are not confused about is the fact that the holidays are around the corner. Prairie Karen will have a shop open in Elizabeth, CO from November 26-December 24th. More info on that later...

Here is to the last bit of Fall.. enjoy it all.. we are looking at our first snow fall of the year. Perhaps today!

Our dear friends, Tuffy Flagler and Shannon Wrango of Kansas Saddlery, are visiting. Both Prairie Karen and Kansas Saddlery have a booth at The Colorado Championship Ranch Rodeo in Hugo, Colorado. Should be tons of fun.

It's Tuffy's birthday, so we are going to have quite a celebration. Happy Birthday, Tuffy!

The weather has been beautiful. I am definitely enjoying Ozanna. We have been riding quite a bit. Taking advantage of EVERY day. Enjoy!

New Additions to The KWR Ranch

My new mare, Ozanna, came from Ron and Darby's ranch, The Diamond X in Shoshoni, Wyoming. What a mare! I am so thrilled with her. Hope to keep her the way she came...What a great minded mind... kind, with a big heart. Just what I have been looking for.

Well, not quite as exciting, we have two new calico kittens, MJ and Mandy.

Our summer has started out SO busy, and I, for one, am thrilled to have warm weather. The Californios was so much fun. We then hauled our horses to some dear friends in California. Had some great times.

PK is off to California again.

In the midst of our Spring storm, we are packing up for The Californios. The wind is howling and we have about a six inches of snow on the ground. Regardless, we are so excited to go to Reno. After ten years in Red Bluff, Gwynn and Dave moved the event to Reno....certainly an easier location to get to ( for most anyway).

A 'MUST READ'

My daughter, Jessica, has recently launched her website:jessicarounds.com. You must read one of her blogs: You are missed, my friend:

I lost you. I don’t know how it happened, and I am not sure how to get you back. My days are harder now that you are gone. Quieter – in that ‘empty quiet’ kind of way. This is the worst kind of ending, abrupt and unexpected, where everything reminds me of you… even the song on the radio…right…now. I have been through this before. Haven’t we all? That agonizing heartbreak period when you swear not to put yourself through such disappointment again. Yet, here we are. I never expected us to end up apart.

If you’re with someone else tonight and all of sudden miss my touch… please come home. This time, things will be different. I won’t demand that you entertain my every whim without appreciating how valuable you are. No more abandoning you when you feel rundown and need me most… you’ve never done that to me. Darling, you have been some of the best company I’ve had in years. This time around, I promise to give you only the best of what I have.

The thing is, I think anyone would agree that we have worked well together these last few years. We’ve traveled the world extensively without one moment of tension- that is so rare! Your willingness to back me up, no matter where we were or what the situation may have been, staggers me. I know you probably felt disregarded when I got busy, or when friends came around… please know that at the end of the night, it was always you.

Just because I couldn’t hold onto you forever doesn’t change how you have shaped me. I still remember that rainy night in Florida when I held you, tears spilling from my face onto yours, while you quietly sang me an acoustic version of Griffin House’s “Only Love Remains”. Only the two of us could hear, and in that private moment, I realized with unshakeable certainty that as long as you were around, I’d be okay.

I know that my blog is relatively new and my readership is painfully limited at this time, so you may never know how much I loved you. I suppose I write this more for me than for you.

Nevertheless, if somehow, in some way, my message finds you, please know that I would do great things to have you close to me now.

Moment of silence for you, my beloved iPod. Though I may find another down the road, you could never truly be replaced.

'Knot Handicapped'

Truly, after all of these years, I am still 'knot handicapped'. I think that is one of the reasons why I love selling scarf slides ( and wearing them). Just in case, anyone has the troubles that I do, here is an easy way to tie a wild rag. Of course, I prefer you buy a slide from Prairie Karen :-).

1)Fold your wild rag in half on the diagonal and then start at the pointed end and fold it into a long roll.
2)Get ready to tie.
3)Turn the left tail end around two fingers.
4)Slip the right tail end under the left tail end and OVER the loop.
5)Turn the right tail end behind the knot and over the left tail end, then under the loop.
6)Even and tighten the knot by pulling on the tail ends.

Hope this helps! If you are stuck, then just buy a slide!

Health and Prosperity

I grew up believing that if you eat black eyed peas on New Year's Day, you will be fortunate and prosperous in the upcoming year. My mom started cooking them early in the morning and there was a special smell permeating the kitchen ALL DAY LONG. The tradition apparently dates back to the Civil War, when THE NORTH destroyed crops and stored food in THE SOUTH. Black eyed peas were considered livestock feed and not fit to eat by the Northern soldiers, so were left alone. This is what helped the South survive during the major food shortages.

So... here ya go, enjoy your peas!

LInda Hayden's Gorgeous Blanket!

Two days ago I opened a long, slim box from California. Of course, I knew it was our dear friend Linda Hayden's blanket! I had even seen it when we visited with Joel(hubby) and Linda at The Vaquero Show in Santa Ynez. However, I hadn't seen it with the wear leathers on, thus it wasn't quite complete. AND WOW!!! What a treat. In Prairie Karen colors, my mare will look so fancy. I feel honored to have one of Linda's blankets. Linda grows plants for color, spins and dyes the wool and weaves on a beautiful loom! What could be more perfect? We are blessed to share a friendship with Linda and Joel...( and with Emelda...a mutual friend). As Dave Stamey so appropriately said, 'there are shrill voices on all sides promising doom and gloom, but if we have our health, and each other, we have everything. Wishing you all the best in 2010!

Quite a silversmith!

For the last five years or so, Prairie Karen has had the privilege of carrying Gary Wiggins' incredible pieces. Gary and Cynthia worth 'round the clock' creating the MOST beautifully hand engraved saddle silver, scarf slides, bridle loops, spurs, etc. Not only does he do extraordinary work, Gary and Cynthia are two of the most down to earth, kindest people that we have ever met!!! You may have to wait a bit for his work, but it is well worth it!!!

The Vaquero Show in Santa Ynez was great fun. We met our dear friends, Linda and Joel Hayden. Linda is 'the blanket lady'. She weaves the most sensational blankets. In case you are interested, look on my site for her pieces.
We found some beautiful old conchos...exciting finds, of course! If you have an opportunity to go, you will enjoy it.

Western Music Awards

We have recently returned from The Western Music Awards in Albuquerque. A true highlight was listening to Patty Clayton and Juni Fisher sing a duet. Honestly, it was enough to bring you to your knees. These two ladies are fantastic!!! If you have a chance to see either in person, do!

Our silly goats have taken to going on walks with us... the cats, dogs and goats have been having a good time. It's pretty funny.

The funniest: I drove up our lane and our goats, Willie and Waylon were in the garage.. how did they get out of their pen? That is anyone's guess, however, they were nuzzling our four cats. Those six animals were some of the most content that I have ever seen.

Zucchini Bread

We have grown the most incredibly delicious and huge zucchini this year. Having just picked the last of it, we definitely needed something to do with all of this beautiful vegetable. Well, here is the BEST and EASIEST recipe for Zucchini Bread I have ever tried:
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 cup oil
3 eggs
2 cups grated zucchini
1 cup raisin ( I substituted craisins, they aren't as sweet)
1 1/2 cup chopped nuts ( be sure pecans are included)
1 Tablesppon cinnamon
2 Teaspoons baking soda
2 Teaspoons baking powder
1 Teaspoon sea salt
2 Teaspoons Vanilla

Mix all ingredients together well. Pour into greased and floured loaf pans ( 1 large or two regular sized pans) for about 1 1/2 hours at 350 degrees. Freezes well.

Three Days with Martin Black

We just spent three terrific days with Martin working in our A-pen. Emily ( Kitching, Eclectic Horseman) and Martin were editing his new DVD on roping, then they came over to our place in the afternoon. An 'impromptu' gathering, it was great fun. Our horses got better, as did the riders. It was challenging for me, to say the least. :-). Christy, my mare, and I hung in there and had a blast.

Snow in September

We didn't get as much snow as predicted, however, yesterday we had huge beautiful flakes of snow falling. Never mind that this is September...we are excited that the mosquitos will go now (hopefully). Prairie Karen is busy, yet we have managed to ride everyday ( well, almost!). Our mares are doing great and we are excited to have Martin Black come by to help us work A Pen next week.

The Stock Dog Trials in Meeker, CO were so much fun. The dogs are amazing. The committee is the best ever. What a great weekend!!!

Wally and I are headed to the Traditional Cowboy Artists Association sale and dinner in Oklahoma City this weekend. We are looking forward to the experience and to meeting the extraordinary artists!

'A Pen' Excitement

After working our horses in Mike Doyle's 'A Pen', we decided it was too much fun to not have one. So, before Mike left for Australia, he agreed to build it. We initiated the pen last week. Several of our friends, including Emily and Belich, had a great experience. Wally and I have been in that pen everyday! We are looking forward to getting handier with our horses.

Prairie Karen is getting ready to go to Meeker, CO. The Sheepdog Championship Trials are September 9- 13th. It is one of our favorite shows... and love watching those dogs work! Hope to see you there.

Pedro Marquez sings at Mike Doyle's Party

Wally and I hosted a going away party for Mike last weekend. Sadly, Mike is headed off to Australia next month. He will be missed by many. However, it was a terrific reason to have a party. We had the great honor of having Pedro play for us for hours. Gary Wiggins and others jammed with Pedro. Such a treat. The next morning at breakfast, he was playing again(even wrote Sydney Rose a song). A delicious chuckwagon dinner was prepared by Kevin and his crew. The evening lasted into the wee hours and hopefully, a great time 'was had by all'...except, of course, that Mike is leaving. Thanks to EVERYONE that helped us out.

Sunday Evening at The KWR Ranch

It seems as though all we talk about is the weather... it just rains and rains and rains. Of course, we are all thankful for green pastures ( which we do have) and, probably, mosquitos the size of bats. Well, certainly better than a drought.

We are listening to some oldies but goodies (George Jones, etc,), talking about our weekend. We shared both Friday and Saturday with some wonderful friends, a home full of friends... does it get better? Had several great rides on our horses, too. Both the mares are doing so well..Ok, so now it definitely doesn't get any better :-)

Also, I have had several opportunities recently to spend some time with a couple of excellent horsemen. Another treat!

Preparing for a couple of upcoming Prairie Karen shows. Our friend, Shannon Wrango of Kansas Saddlery, will be here soon. So excited.

Wow... The weather has been something else. We are all so grateful for our green pastures from tons of moisture... Quite a change from last year.

A few days ago, I audited Scott Grosskopf's roping clinic. He does a great job of presenting the basics while also helping out more 'advanced' ropers. His wife, Staci, and his VERY HANDY young son, Sterling, are so delightful to be around. Staci helped out during the clinic also. What a plus!

Been spending lots of time on my mare...we have even been attempting to rope. It is setting up to be a perfect summer for riding... Yea!!!

So, my mare, Christy has just been so much fun! The two of us have been exploring lots of territory...and, hopefully, both gaining lots of confidence. She is the best...

On another note, my friend, Linda H, the incredible 'blanket lady' had to have hand surgery.... She is O.K., but her weaving has been on hold for a bit.. No one likes that! However, most importantly, she is healing. Recover quickly and we all look forward to see you at The Californios next week.

It definitely feels as if Spring is all around. It is so much fun to see green peeking out everywhere. AND, it is wonderful to be able to ride so much. Our ponies are getting back in shape... and we are too.

Yes, it snowed :-)

Indeed, it did snow..in fact, several times since my last post. And, we are expecting another huge snow this weekend. Our pastures should be green and healthy this summer. All of the animals will be so happy.

We have gotten a tremendous response from our new site. Thank you again, Steve and Emily.

updated website. We are so excited about it. In our opinion, Steve is the BEST web designer that we have seen. Thank you so much, both of you.

Sitting here looking out, hoping that the snow comes our direction. It is wildly snowing in Denver. Snow, Come here please!

We are getting ready for one of our favorite shows, The Californios. It seems as if we were JUST writing about this event (it was a year ago!). The show is April 24-26th. If you are able, put it on your calendar. It is the tenth anniversary and Gwynn says it may be the LAST one.

Here I am listening to another incredible CD, Barry Ward's Whispers of the West. What beautiful and inspiring songs. Barry's music could play all night long and I don't believe you would tire of it. Check out his website for more info or to purchase one or more of his five available cds.

Barry has purchased some scarves from Prairie Karen. He says he is really enjoying wearing them onstage! ...And, rumor has it, he is looking 'very fancy'.

Bear ( as Barry is affectionately known) and his wife, Victoria, are two of the loveliest people. I am so fortunate to know them both.

What to do on Saturday morn when it is 6 degrees out!

The best thing I can think of is to listen to some true 'toe tappin' music. After a song or two, you will be all warmed up and ready for those morning chores. Our neighbor, Lance and his band, The Calfbranders, just completed their second CD! Both cds are fun...you'll chuckle AND enjoy the music, I am sure. Check out their website...for a download or to purchase the entire CD.

We are getting antsy for Spring's arrival. Daylight Savings Time is around the corner, and then SPRING and some precipitation ( hopefully).

Hello, finally!

I am sitting here listening to Ian Tyson's new cd, Yellowhead to Yellowstone. He sounds quite different, but I really am enjoying it. Looking out my window at a clear blue sky, I am so incredibly fortunate. In this time of so many jobless, indeed we are blessed. All of us at the KWR Ranch, never forget that.

Our children and friends are doing well. We all know life is a challenge, so what else is new.

We have had beautiful weather, thus, it is definitely time to start riding again. We have had a few delays....so...

It's Almost Winter!

With our most recent beautiful warm days, we all know that winter is just around the bend. I am trying to ride as much as possible before the snow decides to stick around!

We just returned from The National Reined Cow Horse's Snaffle Bit Futurity in Reno. The days are long, however, it is great to see old friends and meet new ones! ( Ok, that's pretty corny, but it's the truth).

We are headed to Santa Ynez, California next week for a few days. Prairie Karen has work to do!

Upon our return, we have a trunk show not far from the ranch. It should be so much fun! Our friend, Sheri, is hosting it.... she is hilarious!

It's so hard to believe that the holidays are around the corner. So think about shopping at Prairie Karen.

Another precious addition: our dear friends, Emily and Steve are now parents. Sydney is 4 months old. She spends lots of time with us.... and what a holiday season this should be.

Summer Blues

The summer is just beautiful... The blue, blue sky is spectacular. Finally rain... so we have green grass peeking out everywhere. The light is so special this time of the year.

Fortunately, we have been riding TONS this season. Aren't we the fortunate ones? Our horses are great...as are the rest of the crew around here.

Richard Caldwell's clinic was so enlightening... Looking forward to Gwynn Turnbull and Dave Weaver's clinic next month!!! Always so much to learn.

Busy Summer Season for Prairie Karen!

The summer show season is in full swing here in Colorado with shows in Vail at the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo, Elizabeth for the Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo, Hugo for the Colorado WRCA Championship Rodeo and Colorado Springs for the Ride for the Brand Rodeo already completed. Prairie Karen will be in Colorado Springs again this coming weekend for the Pikes Peak or Bust PRCA Rodeo July 9-12 then it is on to Cowboy Up! in Kiowa at the end of the month. I have several new artists on board with new lines of Western jewelry and accessories for my clients to see at the shows. I am looking forward to seeing all of you this summer!

Is summer approaching?

One never knows about the weather in Colorado. Getting all of the plants in and seeing beautiful flowers, only leads to freezing rain, hail and snow. However, we need the moisture, so no complaints.

The horses, steers, goats, cats, kittens and dogs are all flourishing...

The Californios was a fantastic event. It seems as if we are all one big family. Hence, every year, a family reunion! Prairie Karen had a great show. All of our new artists were well received, as well as our 'anchor artists'. Thanks so much for all of you who supported PK!

Next show will be in the Vail/Eagle Valley.... Horse Expo. Hope to see you then.

It's been so long..

I absolutely haven't written forever. Prairie Karen has done several shows. We have been to California, The Denver Horse Expo and a few trunk shows. My friend and I hosted a suprise party that we had been planning for a year. It all went off without a hitch. And, even stayed a surprise.

Finally, I started riding again. And, guess what? Today we are having a huge snow storm. The wind is blowing about 35 miles per hour and the snow hasn't stopped. About got blown away trying to feed the animals. Well, that is Kiowa!

Packing to go to The Californios Ranch Roping and Stock Horse Contest. It actually is my favorite show of the entire year. So, we are definitely looking forward to the trip.

The Coors Art Show

Karmel's drawings are fantastic. The event was a complete success and we all had a wonderful time. I enjoyed assisting with Karmel's wardrobe. She wore jewelry and hand made boots from Prairie Karen!

We saw several of our wild rags ( silk scarves), sterling silver pieces and scarf slides! Also, we visited with friends that we haven't seen in a long time. Again, the event was FUN!

Coors Western Art Exhibit and Sale!

The Coors Western Art Show and Sale is held each year during the National Western Stock Show in Denver. 2008 is a very special year in the long history of this event as our friend, Karmel Timmons, was named the featured artist.

Karmel turns the pencil into an amazingly artistic tool which transforms the canvas into a true work of western art. A reception honoring Karmel will be held on Tuesday, January 8th at the National Western Complex.

Prairie Karen has had the privilege of helping Karmel with her wardrobe for the evening. We are all thrilled for Karmel and send our congratulations!

New Directions From Prairie Karen!

I've been busy since my September blog. I had a great show in Meeker, Colorado at the Meeker Classic Sheep Dog Trials, followed by a successful show at the 2007 National Reined Cow Horse Snaffle Bit Futurity in Reno. I feel so fortunate in that I continue to meet wonderful people along the way. Ten days, however, is a LONG show. So, needless to say, I am thrilled to be back home. Since my return , I have spent the better part of each day on a horse! Yea. Playing a bit of hookie, but oh well!

I would also like to announce that Prairie Karen is venturing into two new areas in order to expand services to our customers. The first is in the area of interior design where I've recently completed my first project in the Denver area. I was asked by one of my customers to add a 'Prairie Karen' touch to her home including changing color palettes, tapestries, adding furniture, etc. Secondly, I am also personally consulting women with their wardrobes. This is mostly for specific events, but anything you need, I am willing to help with. I am assisting currently several ladies that have exciting upcoming events.

Prairie Karen - Riding and Roping!

Sorry to be so long in writing, but this is riding and roping season for Prairie Karen. I had the opportunity to attend several outstanding clinics recently near our ranch in East Central Colorado. The first was a ranch roping and cattle working clinic presented by The Weavers from Red Bluff, California. They are, by the way, the founders of The Californios Traditional Ranch Roping event held in Red Bluff every April. You can read more about this great event at www.Californios.com. In my opinion, it is one of the best clinics you could ever imagine and it gives me a chance to work extensively with my mare, Christy, in a real-world environment. The second clinic was a first for me and was presented by Richard Caldwell from Alturas, California. Richard is a lifelong buckaroo working in the Traditional Vaquero style of riding. It is so exciting to see our Prairie Karen exclusive items being carried in other shops! We have had a great deal of interest in our pieces....and, I must admit, are thrilled. We continue to add new and different artists. Our line is expanding rapidly. It is difficult to keep up, sometimes.

Enough of that....The weather has been gorgeous, our horses are getting fat (!) and everyone seems to be enjoying their lives. I never seem to forget how fortunate I am. Even sitting in front of the computer ( all day!) is as it should be.

Back from Santa Fe

Northern New Mexico is a magical place. The Native American and Mexican heritage of that area makes for a very special trip and a wonderful time! Incredible adobe architecture in concert with the native pinon trees and beautiful blue skies takes us back several centuries each time we visit. One of our business trips each year is to the ancient city of Santa Fe, home to many talented artists and home to some of the best food we've ever experienced. Our trips there give us the opportunity to add exciting new pieces to the Prairie Karen collection.

We have been so busy!!!! Since our last post, Prairie Karen has traveled to the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo in Vail, the Western States Horse Expo in Sacramento, California, numerous ranch ropings and we are readying for The Denver Polo Club, June 23-24th!

The best part of traveling is meeting our customers! If you know me, you also know how much I love to just VISIT!!!

Springtime Travels!

Spring is well underway which means travel season is upon us here at Prairie Karen. California and Kentucky have been two of my destinations during the past month for the Californios Traditional Ranch Roping and Stock Horse Contest in Red Bluff, CA and the Blue Grass Classic Stock Dog Trials in Lexington KY.

The Californios is a unique competition between authentic working cowboys who compete in events that mimic real-life situations encountered every day on the cattle ranch. The men and women competing here are real hands at their trade and are some of the best people you would ever want to meet!

The Blue Grass Classic is the largest stock dog trial in the US and showcases dogs and handlers from throughout the country. It was incredible to watch the skill, speed and grace of the working Border Collies in this competition. The ease and effectiveness in which they worked throughout several different situations was a wonder to watch!.

Home from The Californios

We all had the most extra special weekend!!!! Gwynn and Dave Weaver put on THE most extraordinary event. We loved every second of it and just absolutely did NOT want it to end. It was so much fun to meet all of YOU! Thank you for coming by our booth.

For those you that did not attend, The Californios traditional ranch roping is one of the unique contests that showcase the real working cowboy. The event exemplifies the skills necessary on a working cattle ranch.

We have been without power for almost 24 hours...computer battery about gone! We are off to The Californios tomorrow!

By the way, it is absolutely beautiful here.

It's Market Time

I was gazing out of my office window last week( again...you can see I spend a great deal of time at my computer), peering across our north pasture toward the Conley Ranch, one of the old established ranches in the Bijou Basin. Tom had just loaded up 45 steers in his stock trailer and was headed off to market. It reminded me of the perpetual cycle of life out here which is sharply in tune with the seasons. The winter-spring season is a time of renewal here in cattle country. The emergence of the pasture grasses, budding plants and rain replacing snow each accompany the new additions to the herd from the winter and early spring months. In addition, it's also a time when the first trailer loads head down the road to Calhan, Byers or Simla. It reminded me that it's time to ship our stock as well. That is what we are doing this weekend. ( Of course, it is snowing!)

Prairie Karen is readying for The Californios! It is an exceptional experience.The horsemanship is impeccable. Such a treat to watch. If you are in the area, please stop by.

Quite a Weekend

What a glorious weekend we had! The weather has been cooperating, the grass is growing, the horses and cows are happy...and so are we.

My mare, Christy, spent a week with Mindy. After a long winter, she( really I) just needed a little extra work. I do NOT like the idea of coming off. It has happened a time or two too many. I have a little of that fear ( !) going on. Wish I didn't, but that is the way it goes. Riding horses isn't like riding a bicycle. You do forget...there is so much to keep in mind. Well, maybe if riding comes naturally but that doesn't seem to be the case with most of us.

Enough of that! Casey, my Golden Retriever, is sitting up on the hill...smiling at me! Ah, another day on the ranch.

Home from The Rocky Mountain Horse Expo

Good morning! Prairie Karen just returned from The Rocky Mountain Horse Expo. What fun to meet some of my online customers. It is always good to put a 'name with a face'. And I always love meeting new people...you can imagine that chatting is one of my favorite activities.

While that activity was indoors for the entire weekend, TODAY I am going to the Uh-Oh Ranch to ride with Mindy. The day is going to be glorious...and warm...something of a rarity this winter. The horses and the two steers are fed, a bit of work this morning...and I am off to ride. More on that later.
By the way, I noticed my Golden Retriever, Casey, has been gaining some weight...oh..he has been at the horses' vitamin lick... better get that under control!

Sitting here looking out at my incredible ranch ( of course, being from Texas, it would be called a speck), I can only think of one person...Mindy Bower( who starts colts and works with problem horses and their owners) and her Uh-Oh Ranch. People come into our lives or we bring them into our lives for all sorts of reasons, there are no coincidences. We are the lucky ones! Many times I have thought that she doesn't get acknowledged enough ( not that she wants or needs it!) In fact, just the opposite, she shies away from it. Mindy has discovered/helped to launch several successful careers: Emily Kitching of The Eclectic Horseman, Karmel Timmons( artist) and Ray Arthun (saddlemaker) . Having said that, she is THE reason that I am sitting here(hopefully myself working toward a successful career). She is an extraordinary person, an exceptional horse person. She teaches you about horses...about life.. to open your eyes and pay attention! She expects...and demands perfection. Not everyone can hang with her. It is tough, sometimes. She definitely 'tells it like it is'...sometimes as it isn't, but usually she is RIGHT. Ok.. so that is my little story. Throughout my blogs, you will hear about Mindy, and know who she is.

Living on the ranch with my husband, three wonderful Quarter Horse mares( thanks to Mindy), two steers, two dogs, I am a fortunate one! And, yes, I adore the out of doors! Before you go, check out my website: www.prairiekaren.com.
